DIJKSTRAAT
The Dijkstraat used the be called "De Dyck" ("the dyke") and the current west part it was called "Blauwe Poort" ("blue gate"). This is clearly visible om the right side on an (upside down, with the south to the top) map of Bolsward in 1644. In that map, the later location of the Plantinga shop would be around the leftmost house in the row of houses above the "D" of "De" in the "De Dyck" street name.
Dijkstraat & Bargefenne, around 1890, viewing west. Before 1896, what later became the Dijkstraat consisted of these two narrow streets divided by a small moat. In 1896 the moat was filled in and the whole thing became the Dijkstraat. Note the tram tracks on the south side of the moat. On 8 August 1882, the Dijkstraat had got tram rail tracks.

Dijkstraat, 1905, viewing east. The Plantinga shop would have been behind the head of the fourth (rather tall) person counting from the right of the tram lines. Note that the tram lines have moved to the middle of the street, where the moat had been.

Dijkstraat, 1921, viewing west. Almost directly to the left of where the photographer would have been there'd be the Plantinga shop. At the far end, where the trees are, is what used to be called Blauwpoort.
(Click here for a current Google Street View from the same point - turn south to see what used to be the Plantinga shop)
Dijkstraat, circa 1925, viewing west, a little more west from the spot seen in the above 1921 photo - note the presence of a street lantern, indicating a later date.
Picture found as part of a postcards collection on ponne.net.
Dijkstraat, 1950s, again viewing west, about two houses east from the above 1921 picture. Quite likely taken right in front of the Plantinga shop.
Dijkstraat, 1922, viewing east. The Plantinga shop was in the back of the street, under the "L" in "Bolsward", just in the bend in the street.
Dijkstraat, 1983, viewing east. Compare the 1905 picture (nearly at the top) to recognise many of the old houses still present. The tram tracks were removed after the last tram rode through Bolsward on 28 June 1968. The rails had been completely removed by the end of 1969.

Historian Jan Nauta made a nice compilation of the history of the Dijkstraat which was lifted off Youtube for your viewing pleasure if you click here (works in Quicktime). If you want to view it on Youtube, click here as long as it's on there. For an impression of the last tram to ride through Bolsward on Youtube, click here.
