GROOTZAND

Grootzand, around 1890, viewing north. The actual Plantinga distillery would have been on the left, in the rear just beyond the bridge across the water. The picture gives you some idea of what this important goods transport channel was like. Actually, the left side is called Grootzand and the right side Kleinzand (Big Sand and Small Sand).

Grootzand, around 1900, from roughly the same spot as the above picture, again viewing north.

Grootzand, probably in the 1920s, a detail shot from the west (in the above pictures east) side of the canal. The trees were quite a bit thicker.

Grootzand, around 1930, again from that familiar spot viewing north.

Grootzand, around 1940. Some trees on the left had been replaced by freshly planted ones.

Grootzand, 1983. All the trees had by now been replaced. All buildings had been converted to living homes, usually preserving the original facades.

Grootzand, 2012, same spot.

Historian Jan Nauta made a nice compilation of the history of Grootzand and Kleinzand which was lifted off Youtube for your viewing pleasure if you click here (works in Quicktime). If you want to view it on Youtube, click here as long as it's on there. In the very last shot, you can see part of the former Plantinga distillery at the left. The shot must have been from 1980 or later, as the premises had already been converted to a house to live in.
