DIJKSTRAAT 7
Bolsward's Dijkstraat is relevant to Plantinga's history because it contained house number 5 (where Klaas Plantinga's wife Ytje Keizer worked as a shop girl when they first met) and house number 7 (where Klaas started his own company in 1870).
The first local ownership files (from 1832) reveal that Petrus Johannes Scrinerius ran a distillery at the Dijkstraat 7 premises. His 1817 marriage certificate already mentioned that he was a distiller. in 1862, Rintje Baukes Syperda acquired the Dijkstraat 7 address and started his winery there. In 1870 Klaas Pieters (sic) Plantinga took over, purchasing the location for 5000 Dutch guilders.
The rather dark house with the weapon/crest above the door, to the left, is the bakery at Dijkstraat 5. To its right, with the people standing in front of it, is Plantinga's shop at number 7. The year is 1901. At the time this picture was taken, the first floor of the house was occupied by Klaas and Ytje's son (Gerrit Herman) and daughter in law (Jetske Dijkstra).

A picture from around 1910. Here we have a part of Marktplein (to the left) and the beginning of Dijkstraat. Left to right we see the Wierda galanteriewinkel (fancy goods store), the van den Oever grocery store and pharmacy Bouma. Outside of the picture, to the right, would have been the baker's and Plantinga's shop.

The leftmost house in this picture was the rightmost house in the one above (look at the identical chimney). Left to right Dijkstraat 3 (Hommes' Koekfabriek - "Cookie Factory") and 5 (the bakery) around 1910-1912. In December 1911, number 3 had been sold to H.H. Runia. In 1912 the bakery was taken over by Tjebbe Jetses de Jong. Mrs Hommes-van der Goot started a tea shop at number 3.

Dijkstraat 7 in 1921. Gerrit Herman and Jetske still lived on the first floor then. The word "banket" ("confectionery") and the last letters (RIEK) of "KOEKFABRIEK" are still to be seen on the house to the left, on number 5. The large "KOEKFABRIEK" logo has obviously been moved from number 3 (like as seen above) to number 5. Note the tram tracks.
This picture originated from the 1921 photo shoot made in honour of Klaas Pieter Plantinga's 75th birthday. These were kindly provided by Gerrit Herman Plantinga (b. 1929, grandson of Klaas Plantinga).
In this picture, taken around 1945, it is evident why the "KOEKFABRIEK" logo is no longer on number 3 but was moved to number 5. Number 3 is now J. Hengst's shoes and leatherwares store, whereas number 5 is still in the cookies and confectionery trade. On the left you can see a detail picture of the person looking out of the window on the Plantinga store's first. This is Louwrens Baltus Plantinga, who lived there from his marriage in 1927 (or maybe earlier) until he moved to the Secretaris Haitsmalaan in 1949.
The baker's still has "De Jong" on the windows above the main entry, however the premises had already been sold to H. Landskroon in 1933. Not until his son took over in 1970 was the location renovated (including a new facade) and the Landskroon name actually used.

Blueprint from 1990, very shortly after A.F. van der Feer had acquired number 7 (leftmost house) to add to his sports store that had already been at numbers 9 and 11. Frontal view.

Another section from the above 1990 blueprint, top view. The building directly to the right of the word "NOORD" was the Sonnema/Plantinga distillery. Compare this to the top view of the relevant part of Bolsward in the main historic gallery menu.

Dijkstraat 5 in August 1990. At the time it was still a bakery, Landskroon. Later, this location would be taken over by Meereboer Woonaccesoires ("living accessories"), which moved out shortly after August 2009. In 2012 there was a ladies' hairdresser here, N5 studio Chantal.

This is what Dijkstraat 7 looked like in January 2012. Note the addition of a floodlight at the left edge of the facade.

This picture, processed to enhance the contrast, shows the remains of the "K. Plantinga & Zoon" logo that was painted on the window above the shop door, removed in 1990 when the premises were renovated. Try to compare it to the logo still painted on in the 1921 picture, above. Taken February 2012.
